After an election at the ongoing Winter Meetings in Orlando, Florida, Jeff Kent has been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Kent recieved 14 out of 16 votes and was the only player on the Contemporary Baseball Era ballot to surpass the 75% threshold required for induction.

Former Blue Jay Carlos Delgado received 9 out of 16 votes and will be back on the ballot in 2028, setting himself up for a strong chance of induction in three years' time. Don Mattingly and Dale Murphy each received 6 votes, and each will appear on a Hall of Fame ballot for the 20th time in 2028. The other candidates, including Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, failed to reach the minimum of 5 votes required to appear on the next ballot.

Kent played 17 seasons in the big leagues with six different franchises, being named an All-Star 5 times and winning the National League MVP Award with the San Francisco Giants in 2000. Kent is also the all-time leader in home runs amongst second basemen, hitting 377 round-trippers during his career.

Unbeknownst to many, Kent began his MLB career in Toronto. After being a 20th round pick by the Blue Jays in the 1989 MLB Draft, Kent was called up to the Jays' roster in 1992 and made his MLB debut on April 12th. On August 27th of that season, Kent was traded to the New York Mets for SP David Cone. Despite giving up a future Hall of Famer, the trade would work out in the Blue Jays' favour as Cone would strengthen the club's starting rotation on their way to a World Series title. As is typical with any player to appear on the roster of a World Series winning team, Kent was given a ring by the Blue Jays. Kent becomes the 12th Hall of Famer to have played in Toronto at any point during their career.

Results for the BBWAA ballot will be announced on Tuesday, January 20th, with Andruw Jones and Carlos Beltran being the most likely candidates to be elected.

Congratulations to Jeff Kent on his Hall of Fame induction!
