The American League champion Blue Jays have continued their busy offseason, adding Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto on a four-year, $60 million contract with a $5 million signing bonus. Toronto had to outbid other major league clubs, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, to sign the Japanese slugger,
Okamoto was a perrenial all-star for the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball — the biggest franchise in Japan. The 29-year-old Okamoto led NPB in home runs three times, including six consecutive seasons with 30+ homers, something far. less frequent in Japan than North America. In addition to his offensive production, Okamoto was a three-time winner of Japan's equivalent of the Gold Glove award, winning twice as a third baseman and once across the diamond at first base. In an injury-shortened 2025 campaign in which he appeared in 69 games, Okamoto hit .327 with 15 home rus, 49 RBIs, and a 1.014 OPS.
The signing of Okamoto could potentially fill a hole in the infield left by Bo Bichette, assuming he does not resign in Toronto. By playing Okamoto at 3B, Ernie Clement could be shifted over to the middle infield, pairing with Gold Glover Andres Gimenez. While the jump from NPB to MLB is massive and often takes major adjustments, Okamoto looks primed to succeed in the big leagues, and should be a key addition to a strong Blue Jays lineup.
